Celebrating St Patrick’s Day at the Guinness brewery in Maryland was a blast! There is no better place in the US to celebrate Irish Culture and the Patron Saint of Ireland than at the only Guinness brewery in North America. Great Irish beer with delicious Irish fare, and live music.

There were so many fun and memorable moments during the short visit to Hawaii, but the most poignant was a visit to Pearl Harbor. It is a place every American should visit once in their lifetime. The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center exhibits have been recently updated and are well done. Entry is free. It is also where you can board a boat to pay a somber visit to the Arizona Memorial, but you must have reservations to do so, and space is limited.

Many visit Pearl Harbor but miss out on Ford Island. This is where all the battleships were lined up in a row when Pearl Harbor was attacked. It wasn't until I stood along the shore of Ford Island that I could absorb the events of that fateful day, December 7, 1941. I had visited Pearl Harbor before but not Ford Island and the USS Missouri. Our tour of the battleship with the Arizona Memorial in the distance provided clearer perspective of why the attack was so successful.

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center exhibits, the Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah (Utah not currently accessible to the public) memorials, and the USS Missouri (Mighty Mo) allows us to honor, remember, and understand one of the most important events in US history.

Mighty Mo was a thrill to photograph, and the skies gave me a dream background that only made her shine brighter. As the last battleship built and the last to be decommissioned, she is National Treasure. She proudly served our nation for 51 long years. The newly built ship entered the WWII Pacific theater in 1944. During the Battle of Okinawa, she took a direct hit on her starboard side from a Kamikaze pilot. You can see the dents from where the Japanese zero fighter plane hit. She is also where the unconditional Japanese surrender occurred on September 2, 1945, to end the war.

When visiting this historic site, take the time to visit Ford Island. This is separate from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center exhibits and Arizona memorial launch point. Only the military can drive onto the island as it is an active naval base. A free shuttle leaves every 15 minutes for nonmilitary to visit both the USS Missouri and the Aviation Museum.

The Byodo-In Temple is located at the foot of the Ko'olau Mountains in Valley of the Temples Memorial Park in Kahalau, O’ahu, Hawaii. It was established on June 7, 1968, to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.

The Byodo-In Temple is a smaller-scale replica of the over 950-year-old Byodo-in Temple, a United Nations World Heritage Site in Uji, Japan.

The Byodo-In Temple is a non-practicing Buddhist Temple which welcomes people of all faiths to worship, meditate or simply appreciate its beauty. Even seeing photos beforehand it takes your breath away at first site.

The Temple grounds are a lush landscape nestled below the emerald-hued cliffs with razor-sharp ridges and are home to wild peacocks and hundreds of Japanese koi carp. The beautiful grounds include a large reflecting pond, meditation niches, and small waterfalls. The setting is peaceful and serene.

It is our first time in a Buddhist Temple and has made a trip to Japan move a bit up on the to do list.

Hawaii flora varies through out the year and in March there are far less vibrant tropical flowers than in the latter months. As a result it was time to focus on the trees and lush foliage that grace the island while capturing a few flowers along the way.

The Castle of Portel (Castelo de Portel) is a medi

The Castle of Portel (Castelo de Portel) is a medieval castle located in the municipality of Portel in the district of Evora in Portugal. The castle, built in the 13th century and modified in the 15th, is impressive and dominates the skyline above the town of Portel. It is a fine example of military architecture, and is in a shape of an irregular octagon.

It is primarily a ruin as only the castle's walls remain. That said, it is worth a visit as you can climb stairs and walk the ramparts. Once on the ramparts take in the 360 degree view, and pretend you are the Lord of the Castle in days gone by. The lovely white washed houses of Portel make for a charming backdrop that is truly Portuguese. Outside the walls, there are wide benches where you can take in in the countryside and have a picnic lunch. Entrance into the castle was free.

During our visit we were the only people there. It is these kinds of opportunities where you get to explore to your hearts content. Where you are free to let your imagination take you back to medieval times.

These off the beaten the path finds are often what we adore the most about our travel style. We are ecstatic to have the privilege to learn about and photograph a fascinating piece of ancient history.

Rovinj is a bustling Croatian fishing port on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula. The Old Town stands on a charmingly picturesque headland with narrow, cobbled streets and colorful homes. The town is famous for the hilltop St Euphemia Cathedral, the highest church tower in Istria at over 180 feet. The towering steeple dominates the skyline. The Rovinj archipelago's 14 islands lie immediately off the mainland.

Many visitors often comment on how similar it is to Italy; they are correct. The Venetians had a strong presence here for centuries until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. It passed through many hands over the subsequent years, including Napolean, the Austrian Empire, and in the 1920s, Italy. In 1992, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, the Istria region was returned to the Republic of Croatia. As a matter of fact, Rovinj is bilingual; citizens speak Croatian and Italian.

Even from a distance, we knew Rovinj would be a special experience, but once inside the town, it captured our imagination. It is one of our favorite destinations on the Croatian Adriatic. It is so delightful and vibrant. The active fishing port with the backdrop of deep blue skies and sea was perfection. The lively cafes and restaurants, lovely galleries, and shops were beguiling. You will find some of the best and freshest seafood served here.

It can get busy in Rovinj in the summer though still less crowded than many cities along Croatia's Dalmatian Coast. We visited in October when the weather was in the 70s and we had this wonderful town almost to ourselves. Discover Rovinj; you will be drawn into its magic before you know it.
