We are honored to share our second article as freelance travel journalists for Luxe Beat Magazine. This time, we are taking readers to Ettington Park Hotel, an extraordinary historic property in Warwickshire near Stratford-upon-Avon.
Our first Luxe Beat feature explored what “luxury with a sense of place” means to us. Ettington Park Hotel is a wonderful example of that idea brought to life. The hotel does not separate guests from the destination. Its architecture, history, grounds, and connection to Shakespeare country make it part of the experience.
We visited during our spring 2026 journey through the Cotswolds and South Wales. From the moment we arrived, we were blown away. The Neo-Gothic building rose above the surrounding landscape with towers, ornate stonework, tall windows, and the appearance of a grand country estate from another era.
A Hotel That Became Part of Our Cotswolds Story
A great hotel can provide a comfortable place to sleep after a long day of exploring. The most memorable hotels do something more. They become part of the journey.
Ettington Park Hotel quickly became part of ours.
Its location gave us easy access to Stratford-upon-Avon, Blenheim Palace, and the villages and historic sites we wanted to explore throughout the region. Each evening, however, returning to the hotel felt like coming back to another destination rather than simply ending the day.
The estate has been connected to the Shirley family for generations, and its history remains visible throughout the property. Historic architectural details coexist with comfortable rooms, beautiful public spaces, thoughtful service, and the amenities expected from a luxury country hotel.
Even the unexpected moments felt appropriate for the setting. One morning, we watched a helicopter arrive to collect guests attending the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It was not something we expected to see over breakfast, but somehow it suited Ettington Park perfectly.
Living History in Shakespeare Country
Ettington Park Hotel sits only a short drive from Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The estate’s location and history connect it closely with the region that shaped his life and work.
The hotel even has its own balcony associated with Romeo and Juliet. Whether standing beneath it, walking through the public rooms, or exploring the grounds, one finds it difficult not to feel surrounded by stories.
That sense of history is one of the reasons the property stayed with us. Ettington Park does not attempt to recreate the past as a staged attraction. It allows guests to experience a historic setting while enjoying the comfort, dining, service, and quiet that make a country hotel so appealing.
Why Ettington Park Hotel Stood Out
We stayed at several remarkable hotels during our travels through England and Wales, but Ettington Park Hotel had an identity entirely its own.
It was grand without feeling unwelcoming. Historic without feeling frozen in time. Luxurious without losing its connection to the surrounding region.
Most importantly, it gave us a stronger sense of where we were. That is the kind of luxury we appreciate most.

Set amid the rolling countryside of Warwickshire, just outside Stratford-upon-Avon, this magnificent Neo-Gothic country house combines centuries of history with modern luxury in a way few properties manage to achieve. During our spring journey through the Cotswolds and South Wales, it became much more than a place to sleep. It became our introduction to a region shaped by literature, history, and some of England’s most beautiful landscapes.
Long before we stepped through its doors, Ettington Park had already made an impression. Arriving along the estate’s winding drive, the hotel gradually emerged from the countryside. Turrets rose above manicured grounds, warm stone glowed in the afternoon light, and for a moment we wondered if we had accidentally booked a castle rather than a hotel. As travelers who have visited more than 500 castles around the world, we do not make that comparison lightly.
