Successful travel often comes from experience, and sometimes from learning things the hard way. Over the years, we have figured out what works for us, what doesn’t, and which tools can make planning and traveling considerably easier.
A great trip often begins long before you leave home. From choosing where to stay and navigating airports to finding useful travel apps, understanding credit card benefits, staying healthy on the road, and preparing for the unexpected, there are countless details that can shape a journey.
This is where we bring those lessons together.
Our Travel Tips & Resources are largely based on what we actually use and what we have learned over years of traveling around the world. Some lessons have saved us money. Others have saved time, prevented headaches, or helped us handle those inevitable moments when travel doesn’t go according to plan.
We also believe preparation shouldn’t take the excitement out of travel. The right information can make the process less overwhelming and give you more confidence to plan independently, adapt as things change, and spend more time enjoying where you are.
Below, you’ll find our growing collection of travel tips, planning resources, health information, apps, travel tools, and other practical advice. We hope a few of the lessons we’ve learned along the way make your next journey a little easier, and perhaps have you thinking about the one after that before you’ve even made it home.

Combining Independent Travel With Tours and Guides
Independent travel is our preferred way to explore, but that doesn’t mean every part of a trip has to be independent. Tours, cruises, and local guides can provide access, expertise, transportation, and experiences that might be difficult to arrange on your own. In some destinations, having local knowledge and support can also make travel considerably easier.
The key for us is deciding where an organized experience adds value.
A knowledgeable local guide can completely change how you experience a historic site or destination. We’ve had guides provide context we never would have discovered on our own, help us understand local customs, and take us beyond what we could learn from simply walking through a place.
Multi-day tours and cruises are a different consideration because someone else is determining much of your schedule. For some travelers, having transportation, accommodations, activities, and logistics handled is exactly what makes a vacation enjoyable. Others may prefer greater control over where they go and how long they stay.
Cost is also part of that decision. Before booking an organized tour, look closely at what is included and how your time will actually be spent. Consider transportation, accommodations, meals, admission fees, guides, and convenience—not just the initial price. Then look at the itinerary. How much time will you have at the places that matter most to you? How much flexibility is built into each day?
You also don’t have to choose one travel style for an entire trip. Explore independently before or after a cruise. Add a walking or food tour to a day you’ve planned yourself. Hire a private guide for a historic site where deeper knowledge would enhance the experience. Use free time on an organized tour to wander beyond the scheduled stops.
We’ve found that combining the two can give us the best of both worlds: the freedom of independent travel and the knowledge or access a well-chosen guided experience can provide.
We also recognize our own comfort level. There are places where we’re perfectly comfortable exploring on our own and others where we would rather have local expertise. We admire travelers who venture into some of the world’s most challenging destinations, but taking unnecessary risks simply to say we traveled independently has never been our approach.
Whatever style you choose, the trip should ultimately work for you. Our Destinations & Travel Guides can help you research what to see and experience whether you’re traveling independently, joining a tour, taking a cruise, or combining all three.
This version eliminates a lot of the overlap while preserving the important point: Wanderers Compass favors independent travel, but you aren’t anti-tour or anti-guide.
Making Your Travel Budget Go Further
Travel doesn’t have to mean choosing between a great experience and staying within your budget. Over the years, we’ve learned how to control costs without giving up the things that matter to us, while also taking advantage of benefits and perks we once assumed were reserved for business travelers or people who practically lived on airplanes.
We’ll be upfront: we’re not backpackers, and roughing it generally isn’t our style, though we have great respect for travelers who love it. We enjoy good hotels and comfortable accommodations. We seek out local restaurants rather than making every meal an event, but we’re also happy to splurge when it’s worth it. We look for hotel benefits such as breakfast and executive lounge access, use loyalty programs and points, and pay attention to the small expenses that can add up quickly.
For us, saving money isn’t simply about spending less. It’s about deciding where our travel dollars matter most. Money saved on one part of a journey can become another experience, another day on the road, or even help make the next trip possible.
Cost is a significant factor in how often most of us can travel. But waiting for the perfect combination of money, vacation time, and circumstances can mean continually postponing something we genuinely want to do.
Joelle understands that perspective particularly well after years working in oncology. Life doesn’t always follow the timeline we imagine for ourselves. If travel matters to you and you have the opportunity to do it responsibly, don’t assume there will always be a better time somewhere down the road.
That doesn’t mean spending beyond your means. Quite the opposite. Thoughtful planning can help you travel comfortably without creating financial stress long after you’ve returned home.
Our tips and resources are designed to share the strategies we’ve learned along the way—where we save, when we splurge, which benefits we use, and how we try to get the most from every travel dollar.

Travel Perks, Points and Loyalty
Knowing what benefits are available can make a remarkable difference in how you travel. Airline and hotel loyalty programs, credit card benefits, rental car status, airport lounge access, points, and other perks can make a journey more comfortable while also helping your travel budget go further.
Over the years, we’ve learned how to use these programs strategically. They’ve helped us access airport lounges, receive hotel upgrades, select better airline seats, check bags without additional fees, skip rental car counters, and occasionally stay in rooms and suites we might never have considered paying for outright.
These benefits aren’t necessarily reserved for people who travel constantly. Sometimes it comes down to choosing the right loyalty program, understanding a partnership, using the right credit card, or simply knowing which benefits you already have.
We share the travel companies and loyalty programs we use, why we use them, and the lessons we’ve learned about points, status, and travel benefits.
You’ll often hear these strategies called travel hacks. We’ve never particularly liked that term. There isn’t a trick involved, and we’re not finding loopholes. These are legitimate benefits offered by airlines, hotels, credit card companies, and other travel businesses. The key is understanding how the programs work and using the benefits that make sense for the way you travel.
For us, the goal isn’t collecting points or status simply to have them. The value comes from what they allow us to do: travel more comfortably, reduce certain expenses, simplify the journey, and sometimes turn money we would have spent anyway into another experience.
Throughout our Tips & Resources, we’ll share what has worked for us, what we’ve learned along the way, and where we think these programs can provide genuine value.

Champagne and dinner before a long flight?
Open bar, unlimited food and snacks, bottled water for flight, lovely surroundings, showers, entertainment areas, workspaces, and even places to sleep. All free, one of the many perks that could be yours.
Preparing for the What-Ifs of Travel
No matter how carefully we plan a trip, travel has a way of reminding us that we can’t control everything.
Flights get canceled. Weather changes plans. Luggage disappears. Passports get lost. People get sick or injured. Hotels close unexpectedly, transportation is disrupted, and occasionally events far beyond our control change everything.
We learned that lesson on an entirely different scale in 2020.
The goal isn’t to travel expecting something to go wrong. It’s to know what you will do if it does.
Before leaving home, we think about the what-ifs. What happens if a flight is canceled? What if our luggage doesn’t arrive? What if we need medical care? What would we do if a passport or wallet were to disappear? Do we have copies of important documents? Who would we call, and what coverage or assistance do we already have?
Travel insurance can also be an important part of that preparation. It isn’t something to consider only because of age or the possibility of becoming ill. Depending on the policy, coverage may help with unexpected medical expenses, trip interruptions, cancellations, delays, lost baggage, and other situations that can quickly become expensive.
The important part is understanding what a policy actually covers rather than assuming you’re protected. Coverage, exclusions, limits, and requirements vary, so read the details before purchasing and choose what makes sense for your particular trip.
We’ve dealt with enough unexpected moments over the years to know that preparation doesn’t prevent things from going wrong. It does make those moments much easier to manage when they do.
Throughout our Tips & Resources, you’ll find articles designed to help you prepare for some of those what-ifs before you leave home.
Travel Health
Travel health is an important part of preparing for any journey, and it is a subject particularly close to Joelle. As a registered nurse and previously published medical author, she brings a healthcare perspective to many of the practical lessons we’ve learned through our travels.
Our Travel Health resources cover topics such as medications to consider for long flights, medical supplies we pack, staying healthy while traveling, and preparing for health concerns that can arise away from home.
The goal isn’t to make travelers worry about everything that could happen. It’s to help you think ahead, pack thoughtfully, and know what resources may be useful if you need them.
Below, you’ll find our growing collection of Travel Health articles that combine Joelle’s healthcare background with lessons we’ve learned on the road.

Recommended Travel Resources
Over the years, we’ve used countless travel services, booking platforms, transportation companies, and other resources while planning our trips. Some have become part of the way we travel again and again.
Below are several of the travel resources we use, trust, or have found helpful during our own journeys. They can help with everything from booking accommodations and tours to arranging transportation, protecting a trip, or finding the gear we take along with us.
We don’t believe there’s a single company or service that’s right for every traveler or every trip. We compare options, read the details, and choose what makes the most sense for where we’re going and how we’re traveling. These are simply some of the resources that have worked well for us.
Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means Wanderers Compass may receive a small commission if you make a purchase or booking through them, at no additional cost to you. Our recommendations are based on our own experiences and are not influenced by whether a company has an affiliate program.
Sharing What We’ve Learned Along the Way
After decades of travel, we’ve learned a great deal—sometimes through careful planning and sometimes because something went completely wrong. Both have shaped the way we travel today.
That’s really what our Tips & Resources are about. We want to share the practical lessons, tools, strategies, and experiences that have helped us travel more confidently, comfortably, and thoughtfully. You won’t need every tip for every journey, but sometimes one small piece of information can make a surprising difference.
We’re still learning, too. Every destination teaches us something new, and travel continues to change. That’s part of what keeps us curious and eager to see what comes next.
We hope you’ll use what we’ve learned to make your own travels easier, then go out and discover what works for you. And when you learn something along the way, we’d love to hear about it.
After all, some of the best travel advice comes from simply getting out there and experiencing the world for yourself.
