There are hotels we remember for beautiful rooms, exceptional service, or an unforgettable view. Then there are those rare properties that seem to belong so completely to their surroundings that experiencing the hotel becomes part of understanding the destination itself.

That was the Savoia Excelsior Palace for us.

Standing along Trieste’s waterfront, with the Adriatic stretching out before it, the hotel feels inseparable from the city’s story. Its grand architecture recalls another era, while just outside its doors is a city shaped by centuries of Italian, Austro-Hungarian, and maritime influence.

Our connection to Trieste, however, did not begin with this stay.

Our Connection to Trieste

Trieste is one of those cities we keep finding our way back to.

Our travels regularly take us through this corner of Europe, particularly Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, and Trieste sits at a fascinating crossroads between them. Over time, what might have once been another stop on an itinerary became a city we genuinely looked forward to returning to.

Part of that comes from how different Trieste feels from much of Italy.

Walk through the city, and its complicated history is everywhere. Grand Habsburg-era buildings surround enormous public squares. Historic coffeehouses reflect a café culture more readily associated with Vienna than many Italian cities. Italian, Slovenian, Austrian, and broader Central European influences have all left their mark, while the Adriatic has shaped Trieste’s identity as a port city for centuries.

Yet Trieste still feels unmistakably Italian.

That combination is part of what keeps drawing us back.

We have also come to appreciate the city’s pace. Trieste has impressive architecture and significant history, but it does not always feel overwhelmed by visitors. We can walk the waterfront, stop for coffee, wander through the streets surrounding Piazza Unità d’Italia, and enjoy being there.

Each visit seems to reveal something we missed the time before.

On this return, staying at the Savoia Excelsior Palace gave us another perspective on a city we already knew and enjoyed.

A Hotel Connected to Its City

For us, the best historic hotels do more than preserve beautiful architecture. They provide a sense of place.

The Savoia Excelsior Palace does that particularly well.

Opened in the early 20th century, the hotel reflects a period when Trieste was one of the great ports of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its position facing the waterfront was no accident. This was a city looking outward toward the world, and the hotel welcomed travelers arriving at an important European crossroads.

More than a century later, that relationship with the city remains one of the property’s greatest strengths.

Step outside and Trieste is immediately there.

The waterfront stretches before you. Piazza Unità d’Italia is only a short walk away. Cafés, restaurants, historic streets, and many of the places that make the city so enjoyable to explore are within easy reach.

We arrived at the Savoia Excelsior Palace by car during our travels through the region, and from the moment we settled in, the hotel felt less like a retreat from Trieste and more like an extension of our experience of it.

That distinction matters to us.

Luxury is wonderful, but when a hotel can combine that comfort with history and a genuine connection to its destination, the stay becomes far more memorable.

Our experience ultimately inspired us to tell the story of the Savoia Excelsior Palace and Trieste for Luxe Beat Magazine.

There is always something special about seeing a story you have worked on published, but seeing this one appear within the pages of the magazine was an especially meaningful moment for us.

The feature allowed us to introduce readers to a remarkable historic hotel while also sharing a city we have grown increasingly fond of over multiple visits.

Our Luxe Beat article explores the history of the Savoia Excelsior Palace, its architecture and waterfront setting, and what it is like to stay at a property so closely connected to the surrounding city.

Just as importantly, it allowed us to tell part of Trieste’s story.

Why We Keep Returning to Trieste

Perhaps the best measure of how we feel about a destination is whether we want to return.

For Trieste, the answer remains yes.

It would be easy to treat the city simply as a gateway. Slovenia lies just beyond the border. Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula is within easy reach. Venice sits farther along the Italian coast. With so many famous destinations surrounding it, Trieste can become a place travelers pass through rather than somewhere they stop to experience.

We think that is a mistake.

Trieste rewards curiosity.

Its history is complicated, and that is precisely what makes it interesting. Borders shifted. Empires rose and disappeared. Cultures overlapped. The city’s identity evolved along with them, creating a place that does not fit neatly into the image many travelers have of Italy.

We love destinations like that.

There is something wonderful about sitting along the waterfront and watching everyday life unfold against architecture that tells centuries of European history. Or walking through Piazza Unità d’Italia in the evening, when the buildings are illuminated, and the Adriatic seems to become part of the square itself. Even stopping for coffee feels connected to a tradition that has helped define Trieste for generations.

These are not necessarily the dramatic moments that dominate an itinerary. They are the quieter experiences that make us want to know a place better.

That is what has happened with Trieste.

Each time we return, the city feels a little more familiar while still giving us something new to discover.

A Place We Know We Will See Again

Our stay at the Savoia Excelsior Palace added another layer to our relationship with Trieste.

We came away appreciating the hotel not simply because it is beautiful or luxurious, but because it helped us experience a city we already loved from a different perspective. Its history, architecture, location, and relationship with the Adriatic all reflect elements of the larger Trieste story.

Having the opportunity to share that experience in Luxe Beat Magazine’s September 2026 issue makes this particular visit even more memorable for us.

But our story with Trieste is certainly not finished.

There are destinations we visit, enjoy, photograph, and eventually check off the list. Then some places somehow work their way into our travels again and again.

For us, Trieste has become one of those places.

And we have a feeling we will find our way back.

We have now stayed here three times, which probably says more about our feelings toward the hotel than any list of accolades or amenities could.

Set directly across from the waterfront, the Savoia Excelsior Palace looks toward the Gulf of Trieste and the busy harbor that has shaped this city for centuries. Step outside, and one of Italy’s most distinctive cities is waiting.

Trieste doesn’t immediately fit the image many travelers have of Italy. Its grand Habsburg architecture feels decidedly Central European. Historic coffeehouses preserve traditions more often associated with Vienna. Slovenian influences are woven into the city’s culture and cuisine, while the Adriatic remains an ever-present part of daily life.

Slovenia is only minutes away, Croatia lies just down the Adriatic coast, and Venice is within easy reach to the west.

This intersection of cultures is precisely what keeps drawing us back to Trieste. And standing along its waterfront is a hotel that, for us, has become part of the experience.

A Grand Hotel Built for Trieste’s Golden Age

To understand the Savoia, it helps to understand the city surrounding it.

Trieste flourished after the Habsburgs established it as a free port in the 18th century. Its strategic position at the northern end of the Adriatic helped transform the city into the maritime gateway of the Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary.

Ships arrived carrying passengers and goods from around the world. Merchants, sailors, diplomats, writers, aristocrats, and entrepreneurs passed through the harbor, while numerous cultures contributed to an increasingly cosmopolitan city.

The Savoia Excelsior Palace emerged from this prosperous period. Opened in 1911 and designed by Austrian architect Ladislaus Fiedler, the hotel was created on the grand scale expected of Europe’s great hotels of the era…………..”
