Hiroshima: A Journey That Changed Us

Hiroshima, Hiroshima: A Journey That Changed Us

Some destinations are remembered for their beauty. Others are remembered for the stories they tell. Hiroshima is remembered because it changes the way you think about humanity.

When we planned our first journey to Japan, Hiroshima was never just another stop on our itinerary. We felt a responsibility to visit, to learn, and to understand. We knew the history of August 6, 1945, but no amount of reading could prepare us for the emotions of standing in the very place where those events unfolded.

Today, we are honored to share another milestone in our own journey as travel writers. Our first feature has been published by Wander With Wonder, a respected travel publication dedicated to inspiring meaningful travel around the world. We could not imagine a more fitting story to begin this partnership.

A City Defined by Hope

The first thing that surprised us about Hiroshima was not sorrow; it was life.

Modern Hiroshima is vibrant, welcoming, and full of optimism. Streetcars weave through lively neighborhoods, locals gather in parks, and restaurants serve some of Japan’s most memorable cuisine. Rather than being defined solely by tragedy, Hiroshima has become a global symbol of resilience, peace, and renewal.

That contrast is what makes the city so remarkable. It remembers its past without allowing that past to define its future.

Why Respect Matters

As travelers, we have a responsibility to approach places like Hiroshima differently than we might approach other destinations.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Peace Memorial Museum are not simply attractions to check off an itinerary. They are places of remembrance where millions come each year to reflect, learn, and honor those whose lives were forever changed.

We found ourselves slowing down, reading every exhibit carefully, and listening more than speaking. It reminded us that meaningful travel is often less about seeing more and more about understanding more.

More Than a History Lesson

One of the greatest lessons Hiroshima offers is that remembrance and hope can coexist.

The city encourages visitors to look beyond the events of 1945 and consider what peace, reconciliation, and international understanding mean today. Those conversations felt especially relevant in a world that continues to face conflict and division.

Long after we boarded the Shinkansen to continue our journey through Japan, Hiroshima remained one of the places we talked about most. It wasn’t simply somewhere we had visited—it had genuinely changed the way we think about travel.

Excerpt from Wander With Wonder Hiroshima Article

“We didn’t come to Hiroshima for easy travel.

We came because we felt we should.

There are places in the world that ask something more of you. Not just your time, but your willingness to understand them beyond what you already know. Hiroshima, Japan, was one of those places for us. Visiting was not driven by curiosity alone. It felt closer to obligation, a responsibility to see firsthand what we had only learned about from a distance.

If anything, we arrived carrying a quiet weight. As Americans, there was a hesitation we didn’t say out loud, but both understood. We weren’t sure how it would feel to stand in a place so deeply tied to our own country’s history, or how we might be received once we were there.

We didn’t feel unwelcome.

What we found instead was something far more meaningful. The experience was not defined by anger or distance, but by a shared sense of learning. It felt as though everyone there, regardless of where they came from, was part of the same effort to understand what happened and ensure it never happens again.”

With more than a decade of extensive international travel, Ryan brings a global perspective shaped by time spent across Europe, the Mediterranean, and beyond, often returning to places to understand them more deeply.

Ryan’s path to travel was shaped by more than 20 years of service in the U.S. Army, where exposure to different cultures, landscapes, and histories sparked a curiosity that would later become transformative. Travel became a way for him to reconnect with purpose, perspective, and a sense of possibility beyond uniformed life. That personal transformation became the inspiration behind the creation of Wanderers Compass.

As co-host of the Wanderers Compass Podcast, Ryan shares stories that explore how travel can be a powerful tool for growth, reflection, and connection.

His work frequently highlights castles, fortifications, heritage sites, and destinations shaped by resilience and conflict, blending historical context with modern travel experiences. Through writing, photography, and conversation, Ryan hopes to show how meaningful travel can help others navigate their own journeys—both across the world and through life.
