We’ll be honest, before this trip, Lebanon Valley wasn’t really on our radar. Nestled in south-central Pennsylvania, it was a name on a map, not a place we imagined would capture our hearts. But after two packed days of exploring its historic towns, rolling farmlands, and family-owned gems, we left buzzing with excitement and eager to share our stories.

This wasn’t just another travel media trip (that is what a FAM refers to). It was full-on immersion into an area rich in history, craftsmanship, natural wonder, and small-town charm. Best of all, we shared it with a fantastic group of fellow travel writers and influencers, which made every moment more fun.

Let’s dive into what made our Lebanon Valley FAM visit so memorable.

A Brief History of Lebanon Valley

Lebanon Valley Historical Society

Long before it became a quiet getaway for curious travelers, Lebanon Valley was an essential part of early American industry and agriculture. Initially inhabited by Susquehannock and Lenape peoples, the valley was settled by German and Swiss immigrants in the 18th century. These Pennsylvania Dutch communities brought with them farming traditions, craftsmanship, and religious values that still shape the culture today.

The discovery of rich iron ore deposits in the area turned Lebanon Valley into an industrial hub in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Cornwall Iron Furnace became a cornerstone of American iron production, supplying everything from tools and cookware to weaponry during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The combination of fertile farmland and a booming iron industry made Lebanon Valley a critical player in early U.S. development.

Even today, the marks of that industrious past can be seen in the preserved architecture, the local pride in artisanal work, and the deep appreciation for history that runs through each attraction we visited.

Where is Lebanon Valley?

Nestled in the heart of south-central Pennsylvania, the Lebanon Valley is a scenic region known for its rolling farmland, historic towns, and welcoming communities. It lies between Harrisburg and Reading, just east of the Susquehanna River, and within easy reach of Lancaster, Hershey, and Philadelphia. The valley is part of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, which gives it a rich cultural heritage rooted in farming, craftsmanship, and hospitality that still defines the area today. With its mix of small-town charm, outdoor adventures, and family-friendly attractions, the Lebanon Valley makes an ideal getaway for travelers looking for an authentic Pennsylvania experience.

Day One: History, Bologna, Blacksmithing & Brews

Seltzer’s Smokehouse Meats

Our journey began at Seltzer’s Smokehouse Meats, a family-run business with over a century of experience in crafting one of Pennsylvania’s most unique delicacies: Lebanon bologna. We toured the smokehouses and learned how this fermented, smoked beef sausage is made. Watching the bologna hang in brick smokehouses, slowly absorbing flavor from smoldering hardwood, was both mouthwatering and fascinating.

We sampled the goods, of course, and quickly understood why Seltzer’s produces over 10,000 pounds of Lebanon bologna each week. It’s smoky, tangy, and unlike any other meat you’ve tried.

We did not expect to enjoy our visit so much. There is a lot to learn, and they make it entertaining. Call ahead to book a tour.

Drunken Smithy

Next, we rolled up our sleeves at the Drunken Smithy, where blacksmithing is both an art and an experience. Donning safety goggles and wielding hammers, our group learned to shape red-hot steel into keepsakes. Joelle made a heart, Ryan crafted a skewer, and we all left with a more profound respect for the skill and strength required in this centuries-old trade. They also offer axe-throwing, which seemed quite popular. Ryan is a big fan of Mead (Honey wine), and Drunken Smithy has a nice selection that he, of course, had to try out.

The team at the forge was hands-on and encouraging, adding a layer of camaraderie that made the activity even more engaging. The clang of hammers, bursts of laughter, and glowing steel made this a standout experience.

Lebanon County Historical Society

We shifted gears with a visit to the Lebanon County Historical Society, where a private tour revealed a treasure trove of local artifacts. From colonial-era tools to vintage postcards and household items, the museum offered a detailed timeline of the region’s transformation over the centuries. It is an ample space and very well presented.

The storytelling stood out to us. Our guide wove personal anecdotes with historical facts, painting a vivid picture of life in the valley through the ages. It gave us context for everything else we saw on the trip.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

Just a few blocks away, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church stopped us in our tracks. Built in 1880, the church features Gothic Revival architecture and one of the most stunning rose windows we’ve ever seen. It felt more like a European cathedral than a small-town parish. We were given a private tour, which included the history of the church and its extraordinary efforts to preserve it.

Inside, light filtered through stained glass, casting colorful patterns on the floor. The craftsmanship in every detail, from hand-carved pews to ornate ceilings, was awe-inspiring. The church is even more spectacular at night,

Wertz Candies

By mid-afternoon, we needed a sugar boost. Wertz Candies delivers handmade treats that have been delighting visitors since the 1930s. Their signature caramels are buttery perfection, and the chocolate-covered pretzels disappeared fast.

This old-school candy shop is a step back in time and a sweet bite of Lebanon Valley tradition. They are known for their special German version of fudge as well as regular fudge. It truly hit the spot, and we bought some of the delicious fudge to bring home.

Snitz Creek Brewery

We capped off Day One with dinner and drinks at Snitz Creek Brewery, a warm and welcoming spot popular with locals and visitors alike. We sampled craft beers, such as the “Opening Day IPA,” and feasted on pub fare that ranged from juicy burgers to creative flatbreads.

The highlight was bonding with our fellow FAM attendees over drinks and shared stories. The brewery was the perfect setting to unwind and reflect on a packed and inspiring day.

Day Two: Spinning Yarn, Snow Geese, and Industrial Might

Isaac Meier Homestead

Day Two began with one of our favorite stops: the Isaac Meier Homestead in Myerstown. This 18th-century farmhouse is a living history site where we didn’t just observe the past, we participated in it.

Our hands-on workshop in spinning and dyeing yarn was both educational and hilariously fun. Using wooden drop spindles, we twisted wool into thread, discovering just how difficult and rewarding the process can be. Ryan’s spindle skills were impressive, while Joelle may need a few more tries.

We then dyed our yarn with vibrant, natural colors, including deep purples and bright yellows, using techniques passed down through generations. It was immersive, messy, and memorable.

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area

From the past, we turned to nature. Our guide, Brad, took us to Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, a haven for migratory birds. We arrived during peak snow goose migration and were treated to a jaw-dropping spectacle: over 50,000 snow geese resting on the water.

As we hiked up a hill for a better view, the geese suddenly took flight, swirling in a cloud of white feathers. It was breathtaking.

Some areas were off-limits due to concerns about avian flu, but we still had multiple vantage points from which to take it all in. Seeing thousands of birds lift into the sky so close to our car was like something out of a documentary.

Cornwall Iron Furnace

Our final stop was the Cornwall Iron Furnace, a massive and beautifully preserved 19th-century blast furnace. Once a powerhouse of American industry, the site gave us a visceral sense of the scale and labor involved in iron production.

The interpretive tour walked us through the furnace’s operations, the workers’ roles, and the environmental impact of producing iron in such quantities. The structure itself, made entirely of stone, timber, and towering stacks, was impressive, but it was the human stories that stuck with us.

This place helped build America, quite literally, and standing inside its cool, echoing halls brought that history to life. We found the tour very engaging and impressive.

Other activities to do in Lebanon Valley

1. Pick your own blooms at Royal Oaks Farm. Step into a sea of color at Royal Oaks Farm, where you can wander through rows of vibrant flowers and cut your own bouquet. It’s a picture-perfect spot for a summer morning, and nothing beats taking home flowers you picked yourself. We chose a big bouquet, and it lasted for days. Wandering the sunflower fields was so cool. It is an honor system, and vases are included in the price.

2. Ride and play at Coleman Memorial Park Bike Playground & Disc Golf. For active travelers, Coleman Memorial Park is a must. Kids (and adults) can practice their skills at the bike playground, while the disc golf course offers a fun challenge for the whole family.

3. Hike to Dinosaur Rock. For the dino-lover in your life, Dinosaur Rock is a quirky geological formation that resembles its name. The short hike is family-friendly, and the views from the top stretch across the Lebanon Valley.

Now time for a treat before more activity

4. Cool off at Patches Family Creamer.y This family-run creamery is more than an ice cream stop; it’s an experience. Kids can feed the farm animals, burn off some energy on the playground, and then dig into homemade ice cream crafted with milk from the farm’s own cows.

5. Climb Governor Dick Tower Challenge yourself with the trail up to Governor Dick Tower, a 66-foot observation tower tucked in the forest. The panoramic views at the top are worth every step, offering sweeping vistas of the Lebanon Valley and beyond.

6. Explore Mount Gretna. No trip to Lebanon Valley is complete without a visit to Mount Gretna. Here, you’ll find hiking trails winding through the woods, outdoor performances at the nearby Mount Gretna Playhouse, where we attended a sold-out concert one evening. Make sure to stop by the beloved Jigger Shop Ice Cream Parlor, famous for its sundaes and banana splits since 1895. The Jigger Shop is a summer tradition, drawing families for generations.

Stroll through Mount Gretna’s storybook cottages, visit local art galleries, or relax on the shores of Mt. Gretna Lake & Beach—it’s a place that feels both timeless and vibrant.

7. Pick fresh fruit at a U-pick farm. The Lebanon Valley is full of hands-on farm experiences, and u-pick fruit farms are among the best. Depending on the season, you can fill baskets with strawberries, blueberries, peaches, or apples. It’s a delicious way to connect with the land and enjoy the valley’s agricultural roots.

We paid a visit to Honey Bear Orchards to buy peaches. There is something different about fresh-picked fruit. The store has fantastic farm-fresh fruits and veggies that were beautiful and well-priced.

Where to Stay: A Comfortable Base in the Valley

Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Photo from hotel website

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Lebanon Valley, a reliable, clean, and friendly hotel just minutes from most attractions. The staff was welcoming, the rooms spacious, and breakfast was a pleasant surprise with hot options and plenty of coffee to fuel our early starts.

Other lodging options worth checking out:

  • Hampton Inn Lebanon – Another hotel option offering comfort and convenience, along with a complimentary breakfast and modern amenities.
  • Berry Patch Bed and Breakfast – A country-style retreat with rustic charm and friendly hosts.
  • Annville Inn – A romantic B&B surrounded by gardens, perfect for a quieter weekend escape.
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott – Located in Lebanon near Expo Center. This is where we stayed for our visit; it was comfortable and modern.

When planning a trip, it’s always wise to compare accommodation prices across different platforms. Expedia, based in the U.S., and Booking.com, based in Europe, don’t always feature the same properties, so checking both can give you the best range of options. We personally prefer Booking.com for its user-friendly interface and wide selection, but we always recommend double-checking the hotel or vacation rental’s official website too, sometimes you’ll find exclusive deals or perks when booking directly.

Where to Eat: Local Flavor You’ll Love

In addition to Wertz Candies and Snitz Creek Brewery, here are a few local gems to check out:

  • Timeless Café is a cozy spot serving house-made soups and sandwiches.
  • Mount Gretna Hideaway is a local favorite with hearty entrees and a warm vibe.
  • Trattoria Fratelli has lovely upscale Italian cuisine just a short drive from downtown Lebanon.
  • Isaac’s Craft Kitchen & Brewery is an excellent spot for lunch or dinner with the whole family.
  • Snitz Creek Brewery has a large selection of beers, and they do beer flights. The food is excellent.
  • Jigger Shop Ice Cream Parlor has been famous for its sundaes and banana splits since 1895. The Jigger Shop is a summer tradition, drawing families for generations. We ate dinner here and, of course, had to have some of their favorite ice cream.
  • Enjoy sweet and savory delights at Ancestor Coffehouse and Crêperie, tucked in the heart of the Lebanon Valley. This is a local favorite serving up both sweet and savory crêpes. We have eaten here twice; they make great lattes, and their crepes are exceptional with a wide variety of choices.

Best Time to Visit Lebanon Valley

The Lebanon Valley offers something unique in every season, so the best time to visit depends on what you’d like to experience:

  • Spring (March–May): The valley comes alive with blooming flowers and budding farms. This is the perfect season for visiting U-pick flower fields, biking the scenic trails, and enjoying the first festivals of the year. Mild weather makes it comfortable for hiking and exploring.
  • Summer (June–August): Summer is peak season for farm experiences. Fruit-picking, outdoor concerts at Mount Gretna, and ice cream stops at local creameries are at their best. Expect warm, sunny days and plenty of family-friendly events.
  • Fall (September–November): Arguably the most beautiful time to visit, fall brings crisp air, colorful foliage, and harvest festivals. Apple picking, pumpkin patches, and agritourism experiences make this the most photogenic and flavorful season in the valley.
  • Winter (December–February): While quieter, winter has its own charm. Holiday markets, cozy cafés, and snow-dusted trails create a peaceful atmosphere. It’s a great time for travelers who prefer fewer crowds and a slower pace.

A Shared Experience to Remember

More than the activities, what truly made this FAM trip shine was the people. Sharing meals, laughing through crafts, and standing shoulder to shoulder beneath flocks of snow geese, those are the memories that stick.

Traveling with fellow writers and creators added depth to every stop. We learned from one another, inspired each other, and celebrated our unique perspectives. There’s something special about exploring new territory with people who share your passion for discovery.
