A few miles from the charming village of Piazza Ar

A few miles from the charming village of Piazza Armerina you will find one of the most incredible sights Sicily has to offer. Villa Romana del Casale is a stunning and elaborate Roman Villa/Palace. It is one of the most luxurious of its kind and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it has the world's most complex and extensive collection of Roman mosaics - about 38,000 square feet of them! The mosaics are noteworthy due to their richness and quality, which decorate almost every room. They are reputed to be the finest mosaics in situ anywhere in the Roman world.
Constructed in the early 4th century AD. A catastrophic mudslide covered the Villa in the 12th century. The Villa was almost entirely forgotten. Early in the 19th century, pieces of mosaics and some columns were found. In the 1950s, a concerted excavation effort began and continues to this day. This is an extraordinary archaeological find. Anyone who follows our travels knows we adore ancient sites and seek them out where ever we travel. This site blew us away.
The Villa provides a beautiful insight into the layout of a grand Roman house - the different rooms and their uses - and how aristocratic Romans lived. Let's just say they sure did love living in splendor.
We can assure you that you will never see anything like these mosaics. The mosaics in this ancient Villa are extensive, beautifully preserved, and stunning. You can view them from above utilizing a scaffolding-type walkway that winds through the structure. You can get quite close to them to examine the detail. There is excellent signage describing the rooms in several languages. The mosaics are very naturalistic in style and provide an insight into Roman life rarely glimpsed in other places.
The Villa Romana del Casale is a site that is beyond compare. We could not have been more impressed. It is a must when in Sicily and will be one of the highlights of your trip.

When in Kauai it is a special treat to come across

When in Kauai it is a special treat to come across its wildlife. Anyone who has been here knows that wild chickens are everywhere on the island. But to get a spotting of an endangered monk seal or a threatened green turtle is much more difficult.
Enjoying a late lunch on Poipu Beach a rainbow appeared which in itself is special. Before heading back to the condo I suggested one more pass by the beach and did we get a treat! A couple of Green turtles had come ashore to take an afternoon rest. Then suddenly a monk seal started coming ashore as well but turned back because all the people standing around the turtles. It was a blast to see both the turtles and a monk seal at the same time. First time ever in over 20 years of coming to Hawaii.
The Hawaiians take protecting the turtles and monk seals seriously as volunteers had the area roped off immediately. It was still amazing how many people still ignored the ropes while being yelled at to keep their distance. The crowd did not appreciate the disrespect being paid the turtles either and landed up yelling louder than the volunteers to stay away from the turtles.
